On November 21-24, 2016, the World Health Organization held its 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Shanghai, China. The conference was a chance to gather an international crowd of health promoters to witness the signing of the Shanghai Declaration on promoting health in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and connect with other professionals and learn about the latest in health promotion around the globe.
As well as great representation from the IUHPE at the conference, ISECN was also represented by having its chair as moderator of the conference’s only youth-led symposium “How can youth become future leaders in delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?” as well as the opportunity for its members to contribute to the planning of the symposium. The symposium was live streamed and resulted in a young leader being chosen to present a portion of the symposium’s resulting document, the Message from Youth Delegates on Health Promotion and Sustainable Development, at the closing ceremony of the conference.
The Shanghai conference was a great opportunity to expand the reach of the IUHPE and ISECN and forge strong connections in international health promotion. We can look forward to seeing how the Shanghai Declaration can guide us in health promotion and the achievement of the SDGs!
