As we are all aware: “There is no health without mental health.” Improving mental health is a key pathway to improving overall health and reducing the burden of disease in global populations. The theme of the next IFPE conference reflects the myriad uses of psychiatric epidemiology in improving population mental health. Today’s psychiatric epidemiologists not only identify prevalence, risk and protective factors in a context of rapidly changing cultural and social environments, but also consider the emerging knowledge regarding the interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Key issues include the comorbidity of mental and physical disorders, the global burden of disease, and the impact of mental illness across the lifespan.
